ING Miami Half Marathon

This past Sunday I completed my first half marathon (13.1 miles) and it was exhilarating. Before moving to Miami I was a self-proclaimed non-athlete. I loved being outside and being active, but the idea of competing for anything gave me the shivers. The training leading up to the race was great. It gave me a schedule that I had to abide by daily, but nothing could have prepared me for January 27. My adrenaline was untamable.
The Saturday prior to racing I took very easy; went to a restorative yoga class and then spent the afternoon swimming at our pool (slathered in sunscreen of course) and preparing a music playlist for the big day. I pounded water the night before and went to bed at 8 p.m. The next morning came early and by 4 a.m. I was on the couch in my running gear drinking the now CK famous Green Drink.
The race started at 6:15 and took competitors on a route that covered many of the iconic places around Miami (check out the course here). There were so many people racing that it felt like we were all marked cattle and when I finished the race I checked my distance and noticed that I had run an extra mile just from weaving around and dodging other runners.
I’m still dealing with the aftermath of Sunday – blistered toes, sore muscles and achy joints – but it was an accomplishment that I won’t forget for a long time. I beat my time with a 8:47/mile and finished 81st out of 1050 women in my age group. Nothing like a little inspiration to push me to run a full marathon. A girl’s gotta work towards something!
